barely missed the flooding!

Well we just got back from our Hawaiian vacation on the island of Kauai on Sunday night. We had such an awesome time, but are very glad to be back now. If anyone is following the weather their right now, Hawaii got a lot of rain which is causing flooding lately. The night we got there, all we heard from everyone was how hard it had been raining nonstop for almost 2 weeks straight! We thought for sure our vacation would be ruined. We were pleasantly surprised to wake up to a picture perfect sunny and warm day, which continued for about 4 days. The last 2.5 days of our trip is when it started rained heavily, which did stink at the time but proves that we still got lucky considering what is happening now.

Just 2 days after we got home, we found out a dam had burst in Kauai, flooding the highway and knocking houses from their foundations. One person was killed and at least 7 others are missing. It is just terrible and makes us very sad. We were just out snorkeling in that exact area last week! Because it is such a small island, many people can't get to their homes or hotels and some people are sleeping in their cars or schools that have been set up as shelters. Seeing the pictures on the news is so chilling because we literally just missed this disaster.

Getting back to the trip, we really did have a lot of fun! Our group consisted of myself and my husband, mom, sister and her boyfriend. We did a lot of swimming and snorkeling, which was very fun. We went to a luau on Monday night and my husband and sister got pulled on stage with the hula dancers! What a sight that was! We even fit in a couple hikes before the rain hit. I just keep thinking of those poor people on vacation who got there when it started flooding and their entire trip was wasted. I feel very lucky we had such a great time all things considered. I will post some pictures when I get a chance.

Unfortunately I think you are right. It is so sad because they really was no warning and I am sure people in the area didnt have time to get to a safe place to escape the flood. I think it mentions it that article you placed the link to that two of the missing people were visiting to get married, adn she was pregnant. So sad.
